New week, new RSS feed reader: Google Reader

With 125, 000 websites added every day, keeping track of the websites' updates is not a easy task.  This week I am going to talk about how to use Google Reader to get all the updates you want all in one place.

A web feed (or news feed) is a data format used for providing users with frequently updated content. Content distributors syndicate a web feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it.

Today, there is quite a number of feed reader out in the market, major web browser such as Firefox and Safari allow users to subscribe to feed updates and read them natively. However, there is one short coming in these readers, they are usually not cross platform. Google Reader fixed this problem. One way of subscribing to feed is to look out for the  icon and add to Google Reader manually. However, there is a better solution to this.

Firefox allow users to automatically subscribe to feed by clicking the icon located on the address bar, you will be shown the pop up below: By selecting google from the drop down list and checking the checkbox below. The next time you click on the icon, it will redirect you to google reader homepage, all you have to do is click on the "Add to Google Reader" button and you will automatically subscribe to the news feed.

For Google Chrome's users, all you have to do is to install a extension called "Chrome Reader" and you will have the  icon appear in your address bar. By clicking on icon,  the news feed will automatically be added to Google Reader.

For safari's users, all you have to do is to install a extension called "Add to Google Reader" and the next time you click on the "RSS" wording on the address bar, the news feed will automatically be added to Google Reader.
